Story:
As part of an international brochure project for Beringer Vineyards, a motif was wanted to give the brochure its own signature, one which would go with the phrase, “The Ongoing Legacy of Beringer Vineyards,” which had became the subtitle of the brochure. The design of the brochure reflected the craft of fine winemaking by emphasizing printmaking imagery, which lead to a discussion of dry point etching and the Wabi Sabi aesthetic qualities brought about by some of etching’s uncontrollable and random results.
After a series of discussions with Satoshi Tanaka and Lisa Cervone, Paulo Ferreira sketched a series of concepts from which the wine glass/wine bottle yin yang image began to appear. Another series of drawings found the correct balance between the opposing curves of the two shapes. The drawing was then provided to artist Marsha Mello, who began preliminary sketches toward an etching. The final illustration was printed in a limited edition of 10 dry point etchings, then scanned and incorporated into the final brochure production. It was also used as an icon in the Beringer Progressive Wine List to indicate varying intensities of their red , white, and dessert wines.
