Story:
The Brother Thelonious beer has been a remarkable success story for North Coast Brewing Company, with a percentage of sales being contributed to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for their Jazz education projects. Artist Eduardo Smissen’s original painting of Thelonious Monk as a Belgian Abbey Monk, complete with monk’s robes, captured the serious playfulness of the awesome talent of Monk.
When it came time to design a tap handle, North Coast Brewing knew it wanted something as distinctive as Monk himself, and commissioned artist Paulo Ferreira to come up with a concept. Based on Ferreira’s drawings, Smissen did some additional illustration work to complete the piano key halo that wasn’t part of the original painting, and Whitehill put the graphic components in place. Ferreira created the 3D prototype from which the tap handle manufacturer made a mold and applied a waterslide decal.
