Story:
J. D. Mayhew’s original artwork for the Scrimshaw packaging, as seen above in the label art, had graphical shading to give the 2-dimensional drawing the illusion of the classic 3-dimensional scrimshaw whale tooth. Moody and Ruedrich wanted the tap handle to be shaped like a whale tooth, in effect bringing the artwork from 2 into 3 dimensions. In order to do that, they needed an artist who could remove the faux 3-dimensional shading of the original drawing, and extend and complete the drawing so that it could be wrapped around the tap handle using a waterslide decal. The series of drawings above shows the transition from Mayhew’s original drawing as Ferreira successively eliminated the edge shading, and expanded the drawing in the original artist’s style.
A reproduction scrimshaw whale tooth was obtained to use as a model for the tap handle. Ferreira then sculpted the 3D prototype, which the manufacturer used to make a mold over which the waterslide decal of the artwork was wrapped.
