The Story:
During the mid-1990s, when the internet was first taking hold, three designers used to gather on the Mendocino coast on the occasional evening and talk shop, sharing anecdotes of graphic design, computer print and web production. They called themselves the Web Femmes. When Whitehill was approached by KZYX public radio to help them redesign their website in trade for radio advertising, she suggested to the group that they take the project on as a collaboration.

Once the site design was approved, the station had no resources to have it built. At that point, Bob Laughton, a KZYX programmer who had followed the project and featured the Web Femmes on his radio show, stepped in. He and Whitehill began working one night a week at Colored Horse Studios to build the site based on templates supplied by Copenhagen. When it was ready to launch, they surprised the radio station by archiving the old site off and replacing it with the new.

Although the site design has changed significantly since then, the Web Femmes are pleased to have been part of supporting public radio in Mendocino County.
