The Goal:
The people of North Coast Brewing are serious Jazz fans. In 2006 they formed a partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to benefit the Institute’s Jazz Education programs. They wanted the packaging for the beer, a Belgian Style Abbey Ale to convey the energy and spirit of Thelonious Monk. Brother Thelonious was born. Artist Eduardo Smissen was commissioned to paint Monk as a Belgian Abbey Monk, with incredible results.
The Bonus:
Fun in the service of great beer and a worthy cause
The Results:
The launch of Brother Thelonious has been one of the most successful ever for North Coast. In addition to being available in many Jazz clubs, the beer has developed a following in Japan and Sweden. North Coast is now the official brewery of the Monterey Jazz Festival, and is a key sponsor for the San Francisco and Healdsburg Jazz Festivals.
