Winter Solstice 2000 Poem

BLURRING

The problem is, we blur. At the moment
of crisis, the critical moment,
we blur. If we could just
open our eyes as the rope swing
makes its last precious ascent
and make something of our knees
and throat, arrange our happiness,
we could get married
every day. If I could only
forget my fear and look around
as I descend through pain,
betrayal, succulence,
but I blur, and then there is only
a cartoon-like frozen image
between the leap off and the
crack of the water’s
surface. Perhaps all of life is out there
like a wild audience.
